Rich Zvosec: "Birds, Dogs, and Kangaroos" Book Review

Coaches,

I had the opportunity to read "Birds, Dogs, and Kangaroos" on a trip back from California a couple weeks ago.  It is the coaching story of Rich Zvosec who was a basketball coach that traveled on the backroads of college basketball.  It was a pretty interesting story for anyone that is interested in college coaching.

It made me remember several things that happened to me during my JUCO days as Coach Zvosec told about how he got his coaching start and traveled up and down the coaching ranks to end up at UMKC being the Head Division 1 Coach at a Mid-major.

It will make you ask "Why would someone sacrifice so much to do such a crazy job?"  He will take you in the college coaching ranks of the low-majors and you will learn how not every Division 1 job is a total joy and that McDonalds is a common eating spot for Low-major Division 1 programs.

He also reveals how he lost his job at UMKC.  I totally remember when Coach "Z" was at UMKC, because I ran into on the "recruiting road" when I was a young assistant coach at a small  NCAA Division 2 program and he was totally nice to me and didn't "Big-time" me like some coaches that I could mention.

I honestly think that you would get a lot out of reading this book and realize that college coaching isn't all glitz and that there is a lot of sacrifice to it.  I couldn't put the book down on the three and a hour plane flight home and was really impressed with it.

This extensive DVD set includes over six hours of world class basketball instruction including two full Duke practices and multiple clinic sessions featuring Krzyzewski and assistant coaches, and former Duke players, Steve Wojciechowski and Chris Collins.

Get an all access pass to two Duke practices! Listen in as Krzyzewski provides a coaching perspective of his practices, what he teaches, why and what he will be looking for during the practices. Throughout the practices Krzyzewski provides priceless wisdom and basketball knowledge as he coaches and teaches his players, and provides coaching points for the drills and concepts he uses.

The Blue Devils run a multitude of half- and full-court drills featuring a variety of game-like situations that build up from 2-on-0 to 5-on-0 drills into an action or set play. Get a look inside Duke's split drills where post players work on various angles for the pick-and-roll and "slips," while perimeter players work on penetrate-and-kick action and shooting on the move.

Moving to the defensive side of the ball, the Blue Devils work on various three-quarter and full-court pressure defenses and off-the-ball defenses.

Assistant Coach Steve Wojciechowski explains the importance of early communication and the point of pressure concept as he covers the "Duke Method" of defending ball screens both near the top of the key and on the wing. He demonstrates and teaches the hard show technique, switching and trap techniques in tremendous detail.

Switching to offense, the Blue Devils demonstrate various techniques in breaking 2-2-1, 1-2-2 and 1-2-1-1 full court pressure defenses. Coach K demonstrates the "quick pass" concept and the "catch and face" technique in attacking full court pressure.

Assistant Coach Chris Collins introduces Duke's elbow series, which features set plays that bring the post players above the elbow to allow for great spacing. This opens up the floor for small teams to create mismatches and provides good cutting action and movement.

Every inbounds play is an opportunity to score. With that frame of mind, Collins demonstrates Duke's "Line Series" and "Box Series" of inbounds plays.

Coach K provides you with shooting drills that simulate offensive sets to better teach those sets with game-like movement. You will see how Duke attacks the zone with the post players flashing from behind the zone, and the guards driving into gaps and catching the ball shot ready. He also directs 4- and 6-minute scrimmages where players work on game situations and decision making.

Everything is brought together with nearly 90 minutes of informative "question and answer" sessions that cover topics such as Coach K's experience with the gold medal-winning USA Olympic Basketball team, Duke's method for scouting opponents, advice for young coaches, the best way to teach shooting technique and much more.

This DVD set covers nearly every facet of building a successful basketball program the Duke Blue Devil way.

4 DVDs (438 minutes) 2009.

Roy William's "Hard Work" Book Review

Coaches,
I have to say that I enjoyed several different sections of this book that was written about Roy William's Life. Coach Williams talks about his father abandoning his family with his mother struggling to make ends meet. How it affected him as a child and how it affects him as a coach now.

He discusses how he has two families. The first family is his wife, son, and daughter. He also has thirteen to fifteen youngsters who are not living at his home and they are his family too. Some people may think that he is just too emotional, but he has build life-time bonds with his players that are strong enough to last a life-time. I was blown away with his bond to Nick Collison and why he wouldn't go to North Carolina the first time that they asked him.

His other discussion topics in "Hard Work" are: Why his high school basketball coach was the most pivotal figure in his life, how the demands of coaching affect his wife and children, How he reached four Final Fours in seven years, being inducted into the Hall of Fame, What it's like to have players in the NBA draft, His fierce competitive streak, typical day during summer basketball camps, and What he hopes players will take away from their time with him.

I personally enjoyed the story of how he arrived at North Carolina the second time and his return to Senior Night at Kansas after taking the job. I also enjoyed learning what he thought about that first "North Carolina" team. I honestly believe that you will enjoy his "folksy" charm.

I know that I did and it is honestly one of the better books that I have read this pre-season. I know that you will be able to learn and take life lessons from this book. It will be a truly worthy purchase before the college basketball season begins.

International Basketball Strategies: Learn from the Best Basketball Coaches in the Euroleague

Coaches, I am excited to announce the release of my newest ebook: “International Offensive Basketball Strategies: “Learn from the best coaches in the Euroleague, Eurocup, and Beyond”. I have spent a lot of time and energy breaking down set plays, transition sets, sideline out of bounds plays, and baseline out of bounds plays. I have really been interested in Ettore Messina (Formerly – C.S.K.A. Moscow, now Real Madrid). I have found out that there are some tremendous basketball coaches in the United States as well as abroad. I became extremely interested in their teachings once I started to view their games. I hope that you enjoy this ebook. Buy Now: What is Euroleague? Here is the definition from Wikipedia: “The Euroleague (EL) is the highest level and most important professional basketball competition in Europe, with teams from up to 18 different European countries. The competition is operated by ULEB, a Europe-wide consortium of leading professional basketball leagues. Clubs from Turkey, mostly located in Asia, and Israel, entirely within Asia, are also part of the system. The league usually, but not always, includes domestic champions from the leading countries. Depending on the country, places in the Euroleague may be awarded on the basis of: • Performance in the previous season's domestic league. • Performance over the previous two or three domestic seasons. • Contracts with ULEB. • In addition, the winner of the previous season's Eurocup receives a place. For example, two 2007-08 domestic champions from ULEB member countries did not compete in the 2008-09 Euroleague—Zadar (Croatia) and Hapoel Holon (Israel). Zadar played in the second-level Eurocup in 2008-09. Hapoel Holon, however, did not compete in any of the three European continental club competitions—not even the third-tier EuroChallenge (which is run by FIBA Europe instead of ULEB). Starting with the 2009–10 season, the entrance criteria have been dramatically changed: Thirteen clubs, chosen via a formula based on competitive performance, television revenues, and home attendance, receive "A Licences", giving them automatic entry into the Euroleague Regular Season phase. A Licences are awarded for three years, meaning that the next adjustment of A Licences will not take place until 2012–13. • Eight clubs receive one-year "B Licences" into the Euroleague Regular Season. Seven of them are directly based on the ranking of the domestic league in which the club competes. The eighth is a three-year "wildcard" licence based on similar factors to the A Licences; the first such licence was awarded to ASVEL Basket of France. • The winner of the previous year's Eurocup receives a one-year "C Licence" into the Euroleague Regular Season. If the club qualifies for a direct B Licence into the Regular Season via its domestic league, the C Licence will be awarded to the club not already qualified for the Regular Season that is highest on the Euroleague entry list. • Eight other clubs receive one-year "B Licences" into the Euroleague qualifying rounds, with two advancing into the Regular Season. " Example of the Playbook: So what you will be viewing: 69 Set Plays 7 Transition Sets 2 Sideline out of bounds plays 2 Baseline out of bounds plays These sets come from 14 Euroleague teams, 8 Eurocup teams, and many other club teams across Europe. Example of Set Plays: Example of the Playbook: If you love pick and roll basketball then this ebook will be great for you. It made me start thinking about different ways to attack basketball teams and expand my offensive views. You will be viewing some of the best set plays that Europe has to offer. Coach Peterman

Introducing a New Series of Ebooks: NCAA Division 1 Playbook eBook

Coaches, I want to release my newest ebook. It is named NCAA Division 1 Playbook. This playbook was compiled over the last two years from a NCAA Division 1 coach that has been to over 15 NCAA Tournaments as an assistant and head coach. He has had 20 plus wins each year as a head coach in a major conference. He has had over 10 former players playing or have played in the NBA. It is a NBA Style playbook that is designed with set plays to take advantage of all five positions. It has been used over the past several years and tweaked each year. They are using it this year also. It has 7 chapters to it and 66 plays including half court sets, quick hitters, slobs, and blobs. I spent 40 hours watching games on television and in the NCAA Tournament, 40 hours diagramming the playbook itself and compliling the notes on this Offensive Playbook. It has been a two year project in the works collecting all the games and putting everything together. Buy Here: Coach Peterman PS: Here is a sample page of one of the half-court sets.

NBA Princeton Offense Playbook: Learn the Princeton Offense from the NBA

Coaches, I want to introduce the newest eBook in the Basketball Secrets Unleashed: NBA Princeton Offense Playbook. It is a playbook comprised of NBA Princeton sets from the New Jersey Nets, Sacramento Kings, and Washington Wizards of the NBA. It isn't an ebook designed to "install the princeton offense". It has 103 sets that are run by these teams. It doesn't have the drills to run the Princeton Offense. Buy Now: Example Princeton Offense sets: NBA Princeton Playbook This NBA Princeton Playbook is a playbook designed from how the Princeton Offense is run in the NBA. All of the ideas came from teams that ran the Princeton offense. The plays came from the teams that has used the Princeton offense. The Princeton Offense is known for strongly emphasizing the fundamentals of good shooting, passing, and back-door cuts. The offense takes a high level of basketball intelligence to run it. It is a five part play that takes fifteen seconds to run. The goal of the Princeton offense isn’t to run clock. The goal is to break down the defense, because of lack of discipline on defense. The Princeton off works against both man and zone defenses, and not just against man defense. The NBA Princeton offense is different than typically run Princeton offenses. This playbook has typical NBA sets like post-up and pick-n-roll sets. It is the mixture of sets that help the NBA athletes along with the combination of Princeton principles that work on any level. Second Example of Playbook: Before the 2001 season, the New Jersey Nets were coming off a 26-56 losing season. They went from an East Coast Conference doormat to the NBA finals. They finished 13th in scoring in the NBA and had five starters averaging double figures. Sports Illustrated: “The Princeton offense is old-style basketball. Dribble, pass and shoot. I always thought it's the way the game was supposed to be played." The strength of the offense is about being unselfish and the fact that everyone touches the ball. You can tweak the offense as much as you want to tweak it, but it helps everyone succeed. It has a lot of movement and even if one player is scoring, the other four players play a huge role in helping that process. The positions of the offense are two guards, two forwards, and a center. The guard and forward spots are interchangeable; the center is the only position that is not. The offense revolves around the center and he doesn’t have to be a low block scorer. In the Princeton offense, there are always counter attacks. If they take away one option then there is always another option. Example of Princeton Playbook: Washington Wizards head in 200l and put the Princeton offense in their attack. Here are the results from their scoring: 2003-04: 18th in the NBA in scoring (91.8 PPG) 2004-05: 6th in the NBA in scoring (100.5 PPG) 2005-06: 3rd in the NBA in scoring (101.7) Table of Contents: Half-court sets: 74 Plays Early Offense: 5 Plays Pick & Roll: 10 Plays Post-Up sets: 14 Plays Total: 103 Plays I hope that you enjoy this playbook and you are able to use the Princeton offense for your team this season or just get a couple new ideas / wrinkles for your team. Coach Peterman Disclaimer: The eBook was not written by Pete Carril, Bryon Scott, or Eddie Jordan. I complied notes and video footage from the Sacramento Kings, New Jersey Nets, and Washington Wizards.

Basketball Secrets Unleashed: Dribble Drive Motion Offense "Entry Sets" playbook is now released.

Coaches, I am releasing a new eBook in the Basketball Secrets Unleashed Series. The Dribble Drive Motion Offense "Entry Sets" playbook is now available to you. It has been a very long project that has taken over 4 years to accomplish. I was like you and loved the "AAASA" or Dribble Drive Motion Offense about 5 years ago. I have tape / dvd on DDM from High School, College, and NBA Teams that run DDM. This eBook is some of the earlier entry sets that I compiled from video, talking with DDM coaches, and just reading studying it. I bet that you are saying... What do you mean "Entry Sets"? About three years ago, when DDM broke on the national scene thanks to the Memphis Tigers, I noticed something. I noticed that the really good teams were running sets into DDM. I started to ask around and got all the video and went to basketball clinics like you. Pepperdine, Memphis, Western Michigan, VMI, and UMASS this year were mainly running sets into DDM. I did notice a little bit of this trend at Fresno City College, but not as much as now. I have all the dribble drive motion offense DVDs that are on the market. I have heard people tell me that you have to teach the penetration positions (drop, drag, and rack zone) spots, before you can teach defensive reads. That it is like running regular motion, you need to know the screens, before you can teach the cuts off the screens. They said that you need to know what to do on the drag zone drive, before I can worry about where the defender is. Of course, you have to buy these two DVDs to teach the spots, while you buy these two DVDs to teach the reads. Most coaches tell me that it is just too complex to learn. Last year, I put out a Dribble Drive Motion Offense ebook and most coaches could piece everything together. Questions that I always heard where: I love the offense, but just wish that it wasn't so much free lance from the beginning. I wish that I could have some "structure" to it. Some of the more successful high school teams across the country started to run some sets with it. I really think that it helps pull the offense together. I have compiled a little bit of my research from dozens of high school, AAU, Small College, NCAA Division 1, and NBA teams into these entry sets. I think that it will make things so less complication and will help to advance your team’s learning curve of Dribble Drive Motion Offense. Example of Dribble Drive Motion Offense "Entry Sets" Playbook: Here is the Table of Contents: Entry Sets: 37 Plays Drop Series: 8 Plays Drag Series: 8 Plays Cross Series: 9 Plays Zone Series: 9 Plays Total Combination of Entry Sets: 71 plays Here is another example of the Dribble Drive Motion Offense "Entry Sets" Playbook: Coaches, I hope that you enjoy it. It was the biggest project that I have done in quite a while. This eBook is the younger days of DDM, because coaches can it or tweak it every year, but I think that you will enjoy what we have for you. Coach Peterman Buy Here: Disclaimer: This eBook was not written by Vance Walberg or John Calipari. It was compiled from researching the Dribble Drive Motion Offense for several years. I have talked with tons of people that have offered insight into these entry sets.

Basketball Secrets Unleashed: "7 seconds or less" offensive playbook

Coaches, Here is my newest eBook in the Basketball Secrets Unleashed Series: "7 seconds or less" offensive playbook. This offensive playbook consists of the secondary break, quick hitters, and half-court sets that have been developed by the Phoenix Suns and New York Knicks. It has a tremendous wealth of knowledge on how they would play the Run and Gun style that has been bought to Phoenix and New York. You have to get your players to buy into this up-tempo style. Everyone loves to play up-tempo, but it takes getting your players into tremendous shape. This style of offense will be something that your players can buy into really quickly. It will be great for you, your players, and fans. Administrators want an up-tempo game, because they can sell it better to the fans. This offensive system comes to New York after helping take the Phoenix Suns to four straight 50-plus win seasons and three Pacific Division Championships. This playbook is the high-octane offensive game that made the Suns one of the most dynamic and crowd-pleasing teams in recent NBA history. After a summer with D’Antoni during the Olympics, Coach Krzyzewski of Duke incorporated some of the NBA coach’s innovative offensive techniques to allow Duke to spread the floor and maximize the talent of its wing players, most notably Gerald Henderson and Kyle Singler. You will be able to see this Duke Offense during the next several weeks of March Madness. SI.com’s Jack McCallum writes that Mike D'Antoni is “the man credited with reinvigorating fast-break basketball in a league gone stale.” Here is an example of the "7 seconds or less" offensive playbook: Another Example of "7 seconds or less" offensive playbook: Coaches, This playbook has 104 plays in it and is 168 pages long. I hope that you enjoy this eBook and understand that this is an extremely up-tempo game and a style of play that could take your team to the next level. I hope that you enjoy. Basketball Secrets Unleashed: "Temple Match-up Zone" Defense Ebook

Coaches, I have another new eBook to release to you tonight. It is the Temple Match-up Zone Defense eBook. It has been a progress in work for the last three years and it was totally completed tonight. I have watched more than 100 hours of footage on the Temple Match-up Zone Defense. I have talked with former assistant coaches and players from Temple and compiled my notes into a eBook that is the only one on the market. You can't find this information anywhere else. I took me over 40 hours to just put this eBook together and assemble it. If you don't know much about Matchup zones then here you go. It is the "knuckleball of defenses". You don't see many people run a matchup zone all game so it is totally hard to prepare for it. Temple University's basketball team use to spend at least sixty percent or more of practice on the zone and the rest on offense.
